IPL
IPL
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and it is a treatment method that has been used for various dermatological and ophthalmic conditions, including dry eyes. IPL is the most current cutting-edge treatment as it eliminates many sources of dry eye disease at once. Here is how it works:
Light energy from the IPL unit heats and warms up the meibomian glands, allowing a full expression of the clogged meibum. Your provider will select the appropriate wavelength of light based on your condition. This light will be absorbed by the abnormal, telangiectasias surrounding your eyelids which eliminates them. This destroys the SOURCE AND CAUSE of inflammation.
Additional benefits of IPL are: reduction of bacterial bioload around the eyelids. Decreasing the population of demodex mites that cause infection. Stimulation of the the meibomian glands mitochondria, the natural powerhouse of the cell, that increases the output of the cells. As well as an increase in collagen and immune regulating cells.
During IPL therapy for dry eyes, a handheld device is used to deliver pulses of broad-spectrum light to the skin around the eyes. The light energy is absorbed by the blood vessels and targeted areas, stimulating cellular activity and promoting the normal functioning of the meibomian glands. The treatment typically involves multiple sessions scheduled over a few months, with each session lasting around 10 to 15 minutes.
